Bogey's: A Hole in One for the Records

Whoever decided to blend two of the most enjoyable things in life, sports and cooking, into an appealing combination of fellowship and memories was both a genius and a leading motivator behind sports bars. Bogey’s Sports Bar and Grille is no exception. It’s obvious they strive to bring you the best burgers and sandwiches while refusing to let you leave without an entertaining evening. That is what I went there in hopes of receiving and was far from being disappointed.
Bogey’s has been there for about 10 years, a one of a kind grille and bar catering to the whims and wishes of every sports fanatic. Just off of interstate 575, Bogey’s is an alternate to the fancy yet just as high quality restaurants that families, friends or significant others choose to attend. Although usually crowded, there’s often not a long wait time, if there’s even one at all. And if there happens to be, it’s going to be worth every second you spend waiting.

When you finally get up close and examine the bar
from the outside, you notice how spacious and
exciting it looks, taking into consideration that there’s almost always an event happening. The fact that the parking lot is frequently full is also usually a good indicator of how exceptional your experience will be. Whether it’s a local game that fans have gathered to watch or a night full of trivia and prizes, the grille is a prime spot for fellow family and friends to assemble and converse. Other nights crowds will show up for some Texas Hold ‘Em, “Open Mic Night”, or simply to enjoy the food after church on a Sunday afternoon. The bar always seems to have a multitude of people present, and it’s for a good reason: Bogey’s legitimately makes other restaurants, not just sports bars, look boring.

The service is often fantastic, but is rarely perfect, as service almost never is. Some waitresses may have off nights, which would explain why one evening my friends and I didn’t get as much as a simple “hello!” for around 10 minutes, until someone went back up to the hostess at the front of the restaurant and kindly asked for some assistance. Aside from this one time mix-up, they’re usually excellent at keeping up with customers. If there’s ever a complaint, it’s that the waitress is refilling a cup too often, causing irritation from someone who wished to finish their glass before having a second. In my opinion, problems like this aren’t such bad things after all. Most waitresses and waiters are in their late teens or early twenties, as are the hostesses and hosts, inviting people of all ages to come join in the delight that is Bogeys.

The appetizers we started with were fantastic. Deep fried and battered cheese sticks, one of my all time favorites, as well as some boneless chicken wings were just perfect to starting off a night. I had always heard that sports bars prided themselves in the immensely differing degrees of spiciness in their wings, and now I truly understood why: you could have wings that were too wimpy, too scorching, or just right. So we decided to push ourselves just a little past the “hot” mark and settle with “very hot”, against my better judgment. They were fantastic, even though I had to use multiple napkins to keep myself clean, and I was still astounded at the fact there was three more sauces that were even spicier than the one we had tried. After we had our fill of the most savory cheese sticks, we filled our two bowls full of bones and our waitress had promptly returned to check on us.

Just like the guests, the menu varies greatly. The food is flawless, and their menu consists of a large variety of burgers, standard American entrĂ©es and other side dishes, all of which are cooked to perfection. I personally am a large fan of chicken tenders, and theirs are cooked to be plump, crispy and succulent, with side sauces of honey mustard, barbeque, ranch, or anything else you would prefer. This, combined with the shining golden fries on their square, creamy white plates is easily the best looking and tasting meal I’ve eaten all week. Other meals keep me salivating as I watch the waitresses walk, successfully trying to balance multiple meals at a time: a large mountain of nacho’s, covered in jalapeno’s and queso dip, with a side of salsa, or a chicken club sandwich with the freshest lettuce and most delicious looking chicken breasts, topped with juicy tomatoes and crunchy bacon. My only regret is that I can only order one meal a night, and can’t sample a majority of the menu.

The restaurant is divided into two halves, tactically separated by the bar in the middle to attract attention. They also have a large amount of televisions hanging from the ceiling, numbering around forty or more throughout the grille, playing a large assortment of sports from teams and players all over the world. On the far left is a small arcade, with popular sports games including deer shooting, golf, and tennis. The atmosphere is dimly lit, maximizing the effects of both the multiple televisions and the dozens of neon signs hanging around the walls. When everything is taken into consideration, it adds greatly to the surrounding environment. Also, there’s usually pleasant music playing, either some old classic hits or present general pop sensation bands. Either way, the music always seems to add just the right touch of style to environment in a positive way.

As we finished up our meal, the waitress was quick to clear our table and to bring us the bill. Reasonably priced for the amount of food we got and the quality of the grille, I didn’t complain, but wasn’t particularly happy either. She did, however, tend to our needs from the beginning of our evening till the moment we left, making me feel like it was money well spent. I took this chance to check out the washrooms, which were as stylish as the rest of the restaurant. As we departed, the parking lot even fuller than when we had arrived, I looked longingly at the restaurant, hoping to soon return again.

When everything is taken into consideration, I’d rate the restaurant at an overall four stars. The food itself looked almost as good as it tasted, earning four and a half stars, and the service was at four stars itself. The food price, however, earned only three and a half stars because many places around could have offered the same foods for cheaper. The atmosphere rating was at four stars, mainly because of the multiple televisions, layout and lighting. One of the biggest plusses of the grille was the ambiance of the grille. It wasn’t too loud, but there was always something exciting happening that kept your attention for your whole visit. On the downside, however, the restaurant was often times packed and caused the staff to unevenly split their attention between customers, food and seating. All things considered, this is by far the best sports bar and grille I’ve ever visited, and one of the best overall restaurants I’ve ever reviewed. If you’re a fan of sports, fried food, entertaining evenings, or any combination of the three, I highly recommend you give it a shot!
