The French Chef Cookbook

This cookbook was written by the famed Julia Child and chronicles the recipes that she used on her famous cooking show, "The French Chef". The recipes are organized according to the show that they originally appeared on, although there is also an index in the back that divides them into more traditional categories. These recipes are aimed at the home cook who knows the basics of traditional American food but may have been intimidated by some of the ingredients and techniques used in classic French cooking. Child helps to make these recipes much more approachable by explaining them as well as going over how to treat and prepare ingredients the average chef would find unfamiliar and daunting. The middle of this book also contains a visual guide showing some advanced techniques, french preparation methods, as well as a basic guide to the equipment every home cook should have. Overall while this book is not for those uninitiated in the kitchen, it will serve as a good introduction to French cooking for those unfamiliar with the cuisine.

Carefree CookingWhile the previous cookbook was aimed at the experienced cook looking to broaden their horizons, "Carefree Cooking" is a collection of fairly easy recipes and trick for the novice cook that are sure to impress. These recipes are also much more focused on the the cook who is on vacation with their family but still wants to cook a delicious meal, and may not have the time or resources available that they normally would. It contains many tips and tricks to be used when cooking for a large group. Such as at a party or open house. It also has chapters devoted to what to do in an emergency if power is lost, and how to buy produce when traveling to your vacation destination. In general the recipes in this book are fairly simple and many are meant to be prepared on short notice, quickly and easily. This book would be a useful resource if you found yourself prepared to go on vacation and were at a loss as to what to cook while you were away.
